Celine road-trips around Tropical North Queensland

1Hello!

After a nice short break, we are all back to Uni now.

I spent my lecture recess road tripping through North Queensland. This week, I am going to tell you about my first part of the lecture recess road trip.

After a long, chaotic planning phase, our group of 5 finally managed to book a campervan and to organise a route for our lecture recess trip.

On Friday, our friend Janine picked up the campervan in Cairns and drove it all the way down to Townsville to come and meet the rest of us. After a barbecue with some friends, we all went to bed early to be ready to start our trip well rested on Saturday morning. First stop: Charters Towers!

From there, we drove to the Dalrymple National Park, to get a bit of an ‘outback-feeling‘.

Once we had arrived at the coast again, we stopped at Saunders beach for our first night in our awesome rooftop tent.

Woken up by the sound of the waves the next morning, we continued our journey to the Girringun National Park.  This is where the biggest waterfalls in Australia are located – the Wallaman Falls. A one-hour walking track leads directly to the bottom of the falls, where we went for a swim.

We spend the night at the Wallaman Falls campground.

The next morning was started with a swim at the rock pool right next to the camp-ground. Our next stop was Lake Eacham, which is located in the Atherton Tablelands. This lake is perfect for a swimming, watching wildlife such as turtles, pelicans, as well as having nice barbecues alongside the lake.

After having a nice swim in Lake Eacham, we continued our journey through the Atherton Tablelands the next day.

We then drove to Granite Gorge where we did some hiking, swimming and rock-wallaby feeding.

Our plan of free camping somewhere at the beach did not work out, as it was prohibited to camp anywhere near the water. We decided on camping at a campground at Wonga Beach, which was however, already closed. Suddenly, a woman appeared out of nowhere, telling us we could stay in her garden. That’s Australia!

The next day, we went to see the Daintree Rainforest. We did a 1.5 hour walk through the rainforest and then went for a swim at Mossman Gorge.

Finally, we drove up to Cape Tribulation…

We then had to head back down to Cairns and back home on Friday.

Here you see the complete trip we made:
