My name is Yasmine and I’m currently studying my Master of Science in Zoology and Ecology at the Cairns JCU campus! How did I wind up here at JCU? Well it all started back home in the USA.
I’m Brazilian-born but have lived most of my life in Massachusetts. There I attended UMass Amherst where I majored in biology and earned my Bachelor of Science. After graduating, I went on to do pharmaceutical research for 4 years. While I learned a lot at this job it was not the career path I had envisioned for myself. Since I was a child I had always loved animals so it only made sense that I find a career in which I somehow worked with all kinds of creatures. That is when I decided to go back to school to study zoology.
I researched several schools in the United States but none of them seemed to have what I was looking for. That’s when I came across James Cook University. By all accounts it seemed like the perfect university for me. The MSc program sounded exactly like what I was looking for to study. I made the decision to apply and was happy to find out I was accepted but in the back of my mind I was absolutely terrified. Would this program actually be good? Would I be able to live so far from my family and friends for so long? After being out of school for so long would I be able to adapt to academic life again? So many questions ran through my mind and doubt crept in but after some persistent prodding and support from my best friend I finally decided to attend JCU.
And I couldn’t be happier I made that choice! I survived my first semester here and the second one is already under way! If you’re interested in finding out more about my studies, my daily activities, and my travels throughout Australia, keep checking back for my blog posts!
