Klara Lindstroem (Sweden) – Bachelor of Advanced Science (Marine Biology)

I knew that I wanted to study marine biology ever since I was 12 years old. I read these books about a girl that sails around the world with her parents working as a marine biologist, and I thought that sounded like an amazing job.

I did marine biology in high school back in Sweden, and I just knew I wanted to do it. I started to research universities and I found out about JCU. I got so excited and I planned for over a year, it was my dream to go there.

I did an internship at a marine biology station in Sweden, and they spoke very highly about JCU too. They had a few scientists that had actually studied here. So I started to do more research on the website and thought this was a good place, I want to go there.

JCU is so close to the Great Barrier Reef and I hadn’t seen a reef before I came to Australia. I knew I wanted to explore the reefs, and this is probably the best place to do it.

I like Townsville a lot, but it was very different. In the beginning, it felt very scary, everything was so different. But I found the people here are very nice and genuine and really want to help all the time.

It was easy to find friends, I lived on college for my first 6 months and that helps a lot to get connections. People are so helpful there.

If you really want a great experience, this is a really good opportunity. Just changing environment is really helpful too, you grow so much as a person. This is probably the best decision I’ve made in my life to come here.

My English has become so much better too in the last six months and I feel like it’s helping with everything. Studying in English is not that hard, it’s hard for the first month maybe, but then you get into it.

I’ve already started thinking everything in English, when I want to call my parents I start thinking in English everything I want to tell them and then I’m like ‘oh wait, I’m going to speak Swedish to them, not English!’ I feel like this is a great place.

The networks I’ve made here will help (my career) a lot. It’s great to have a lot of friends in your class and you make connections. Just talking to our lecturers also, they tell me about these great opportunities for volunteer work and you get experience in so many different things.

Reading our lecturers articles online is just great and their research gives you great connections. You start hearing about other things around the world too because it’s such an international place, you don’t get stuck in one place, you hear about all these other amazing opportunities.

I think I’m most proud of actually doing it – coming here. Studying and living your normal life and just accepting that this is my new life and making the best of it. It’s been working really well, and I’m so happy.
